Irmarie Luijk - de Visser
“…if you dare to join us in taking off our Western glasses that define what we think is right, in order to focus entirely on what the local inhabitants come up with themselves…”. This sentence, written by our project-leader Laetitia Simorangkir for the project website, was what got me interested in joining the Father-Involvement Challenge.
A little more than three years ago, I graduated from Stellenbosch University (SA) and completed the full Bachelor of Arts International Studies there. I am now 25 years old and I live in Amersfoort, The Netherlands. It has been difficult for me to find work in my study-field, especially because I did my bachelor in another country. I am joining this challenge for the reason that I can finally put to use the knowledge I gained about South African history and cultures during my study. This research-project is an opportunity for me to improve my (research) skills and to learn more about other peoples and cultures. Furthermore, this program spoke to me because it can bring about positive change in the communities of Hammanskraal, without us enforcing our own ideas and ideologies on them.
