Participatory Action Research for Positive Change

Emma PierreMuli bwanji!

During my study Social Innovation at The Performatory (Breda University), I focus on the development of new concepts, strategies, experiences and products to improve or solve complex challenges and that our rapid changing society faces. Together with all young professionals we team-up and aim for social impact. The past year I have focussed on people who are stuck in vicious circles and recurring patterns of their environment or existing systems. I believe that co-creation is a key word in the process of seeking solutions to many challenges. Transformation and movement can be stimulated by using non-traditional research methods and inspires participants to take action in the desired direction. A method, that I believe, creates sustainable and long-lasting solutions. Of course, this is exactly what we want to achieve with The Sustainable Tourism Challenge.

Not many organisations work with Action Research and Appreciative Inquiry, so when hearing about the opportunity to join The Sustainable Tourism Challenge, my choice was quickly made. The STC provides the opportunity to fully dive in to a serious issue that touches my heart. I am super excited that my skills can be part of something bigger. Moreover, I am really looking forward to learn from working together with the locals of Mfuwe. Besides making new friends, I hope that we can come up with a suitable and long-lasting solution that improves the current situation for the locals, regarding the influence of tourism on the area.

When returning back to The Netherlands, I will conduct more research regarding using the PAR method in so I can imply in future projects and my career. Furthermore, I would love to put my energy in educating other young professionals in using the methods we have learnt during The Sustainable Tourism Challenge. Maybe I will even join another 7Senses Challenge next year 🙂

So yeah, hi guys! My name is Emma Pierre, born in 1993 and I live together with my partner and African dog in the beautiful city of Breda. After finishing the studies Photography and Commercial Management, I worked for three years as a freelance event and brandmanager for several companies. In 2016 I started studying Leisure Management at the NHTV Breda University. In 2017 I choose to specialise in Social Innovation which I absolutely enjoy. In my free time I like graphic design(ing), photography, playing games with friends, walking my dog, being at the beach and in nature and cooking tasty meals.
